Duquesne Tops Ohio State, 9-8, In Final 20 Seconds

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Duquesne University's lacrosse team (12-3) pulled out a 9-8 victory over host Ohio State (5-10) on a free position shot in the final 20 seconds of the game. Laura App's third goal of the game was the winner. Ginger Flocco had a game-high four goals for the Dukes while OSU's Caroline Weatherill scored three times for the Buckeyes. The Dukes came back from a 6-0 halftime deficit to gain the win in the Red and Blue's final non-conference game of the season.
Ohio State started out strong in the first half. Kelyn Laws opened the scoring with 5:57 gone in the first half on an unassisted goal. Ashley Evans scored unassisted at 13:49 to make it 2-0, OSU. Weatherill make it 3-0 at 23:48 on an assist from Regina Oliver. Oliver then scored at 24:13 on an assist from Melissa Sands . On a free position shot at 25:07, Natale Miller made it 5-0. Oliver's unassisted goal at 29:57 ended the first half scoring with Ohio State leading, 6-0.
Duquesne opened the second half scoring with a free position goal by App at 32:14. App scored again at 35:10, unassisted. Flocco, on an unassisted goal at 40:11, cut the Ohio State lead to 6-3. OSU's Weatherill's second goal at 43:47 made it 7-3, OSU. Ohio State goalie Kim Hastings received a yellow card foul at 47:24 and had to leave the field for the three-minute penalty. Taryn Bowen replaced Hastings, but because of the foul had to line up behind Flocco for the free position attempt. Flocco scored on the attempt at 47:24 to make the score, 7-4. Kelly Mulford then scored unassisted for Duquesne at 39:33 and with Flocco's second free position goal at 51:03, cut the Ohio State lead to 7-6. Hastings returned to goal for Ohio State and at 51:56, Weatherill's third goal of the game gave the Buckeyes an 8-6 lead. The Dukes closed to within one at 8-7 on a free position goal by Krista Mann at 54:52. Duquesne tied the game at eight with Flocco's third free position goal at 57:36. App's free position goal at 59:40 gave Duquesne a 9-8 lead with 20 second remaining. The Buckeyes controlled the draw but could not score as the game ended.
In goal for Duquesne, Sarah Pacini won her 12th game of the season while making eight saves. OSU's Hasting took the loss in goal, playing 56:20. She had three saves and gave up six goals. Buckeye Bowen played 3:40 and gave up three goals.
The Dukes, who have a 5-1 Atlantic 10 record, close out the regular season against La Salle (3-11, 0-5) at Rooney Stadium at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, April 30, 2004.
