Dukes Take La Salle in Season Finale
May 1, 2005
The Duquesne women's lacrosse team took it's second-straight share of the regular-season A-10 title defeating host La Salle 11-5 Sunday morning in Philadelphia. Kelly Mulford netted four goals to lead the Red & Blue followed by Ginger Flocco's three scores. Sarah Pacini (left) had 10 saves. Duquesne will compete in the A-10 Championships beginning Friday, May 6, at the University of Richmond.
The Dukes took a quick 3-0 lead as App, Flocco and Mulford each notched unassisted goals before La Salle senior Kate Henwood scored the Explorers first goal of the game. Courtney Tamasitis scored from Caroline Gallagher for a 4-1 lead, but Emily Bonczek brought the Explorers to within two, 4-2. The frame would conclude with Krista Mann and Mulford hitting unassisted goals to end the period with a 6-2 lead for the Dukes.
Duquesne then came out and scored the first four goals of the second period to take a commanding 10-2 lead with just under 20 minutes remaining in the game. Hitting goals for the Red & Blue was Mulford (two scores), Gallagher and Flocco. Bonczek scored two more times for the Explorers, but it wasn't enough as the Dukes walked away with the 11-5 victory making them 6-1 in the conference, 12-3 overall.
Duquesne shared the 2005 title with Temple, but will enter the championship as the No. 2 seed by virtue of the tie-breaker. The Dukes' only loss was to the Owls this season. George Washington takes the No. 3 seed in the tie-breaker as it defeated Richmond during the regular season. Duquesne defeated the Colonials in overtime on the road during the regular season handing them their first A-10 loss.
