PITTSBURGH - Second-year Duquesne lacrosse head coach Lisa Evans recently announced that seniors Sarah Dawley (Columbus, Ohio/Bexley) and Jill Vacanti (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) will serve as the Dukes' captains for the upcoming 2018 season.
“We are really excited to announce Sarah and Jill as our captains for the 2018 season," Evans said. "Both players embody what it means to be a Duke. They are highly respected members of our team and have demonstrated excellent leadership skills over the course of their career. They complement each other well and will undoubtedly lead us to great things this upcoming season.”
Vacanti paced Duquesne with 45 points and 38 goals as a junior in 2017. She added 10 ground balls, three draw controls and four caused turnovers, as well. Vacanti had at least three goals in six of 17 games last season, including a season-high four goals against No. 6 Penn State and again against Saint Francis U.
She also led the Dukes with 55 points as a sophomore in 2016, scoring 47 goals to go with eight assists. Vacanti enters her senior campaign with 134 career points including 105 goals and 29 assists.
Dawley appeared in 15 games for Duquesne as a junior in 2017, recording 13 draw controls, 12 ground balls and 10 caused turnovers in addition to scoring a goal for the Dukes. She has appeared in 46 games during her career with eight goals, 28 draw controls, 23 ground balls and 16 caused turnovers in three seasons.
Duquesne is slated to open the 2018 season on Saturday, Feb. 17 against Robert Morris at Arthur J. Rooney Field. The contest is set to begin at 1 p.m. ET.
