Rowers Wrap Up Spring Training at Metro Cup Regatta in Florida

On Saturday, March 5th the Duquesne Women’s Rowing Team capped off a week of spring training in Florida with the Metro Cup Regatta hosted by Rollins College on Lake Maitland in Winter Park, FL. Villanova University and the University of Central Florida were also in attendance. The 1950m course was slightly choppy with a floating start.

The first event of the day was the women’s varsity eight. The line-up of coxswain Faith Caldiero, stroke Sydnie Pennington, Jessica Goldstein, Samantha Dunn, Lauren Hughes, Emily Herzig, Cassandra Holder, Abigail Bailey, and bow Rachel Swain dealt with some rough waters from recreational boat wakes in the middle of the race. They crossed the line second in 6:45.2 behind the University of Central Florida (6:34.0) and ahead of Villanova University (6:55.5) and Rollins College (7:23.2).

The women’s second varsity eight of coxswain Amanda Booth, Shelby Rocco, Morgan Starczewski, Mary Katherine Byrne, Madeleine Troppe, Kaitlyn Clem, Serena Benages, Marianna Manfredi, and bow Jenna Boyd also finished second to the University of Central Florida with times of 6:57.3 and 6:53.6 respectively. Villanova finished in third in 7:25.1.



In one of the tightest finishes of the day the women’s varsity four (stroke Meredith Starczewski, Emily Ames, Margot Gagen, Olivia Delaney, and coxswain Grace Hindes) raced the length of the course bow to bow with the varsity four from UCF. They were unable to clinch the win and crossed the line second in 7:37.0, just .7 of a second behind UCF who finished in 7:36.3. Rollins finished third in 8:02.2 with Villanova in fourth (8:20.8), and the UCF Club team in fifth (8:46.5).

The women’s second varsity four (stroke Kira Butler, Mary Kate Keenoy, Anne Stevens, Alison Kane, and coxswain Caroline Dirr) was also a tight race the length of the course. The Duquesne women crossed the line first in 7:46.0 almost 3 seconds ahead of UCF (7:48.9). Villanova finished third (8:00.8) and Rollins finished fourth (8:19.0).

The novice four of Erica Maney, Molly Harkins, Gabriella Spahr, Rachel Sann, and coxswain Lindsey Thelk finished their race third in 8:38.0. UCF finished first (8:08.5), Rollins second (8:12.5), and the club team from UCF fourth (8:47.0).

Duquesne’s freshman/novice eight of coxswain Mary Clay, stroke Sarah Clair, Kasie Sayers, Lauren Murray, Lauryn Garretson, Allison Schmitt, Margaret Cunningham, Greta Spitzer, and Riley McGonigle finished first in their event in 7:17.4. this was over 5 second ahead of second place Villanova (7:23.1), with UCF in third (7:27.5), Villanova B in fourth (7:33.1) and Rollins in fifth (7:33.6).

The final event of the day was the women’s third varsity four in which Duquesne and UCF were the only entries. The four from UCF finished first in 7:55.6 with the Duquesne line-up of Margot Gagen, Antonia Maffia, Maureen O’Brien, Olivia Szallai, and coxswain Abigail Guenther crossing the line in 8:01.0.

The Dukes will return to the Allegheny River this week and will race again on Saturday, March 26th against the University of Dayton and Marietta College in Ohio.
