Rowers Back on the Water in Florida During Spring Break
The Novice 8 took first place, edging Villanova by over two seconds

For the week of spring break the women's rowing team enjoyed some sun, warmth, and much needed water time in Orlando, FL. To close out the week they took part in a race on Lake Maitland against teams from Nova Southeastern, Rollins College, The University of Florida, and Villanova University.

The water was flat and the weather was perfect for a day of racing on Saturday morning. Duquesne had a total of 8 boats race.

The women's varsity eight was the first race of the day for Duquesne. The line-up of coxswain: Kristy Pietrone, stroke: Lauren Turner, Courtney Purslow, Hannah Mazur, Marissa Conlin, Julia Borsari, Laura Dunlap, Rachael Ross, and bow: Lauren Hughes had a strong race and finished second in 6:44.2 to Nova Southeastern (6:34.3). Third was the University of Florida (6:47.4), Villanova was fourth (6:58.8) and fifth was Rollins (7:08.0).

In the JV 8 of coxswain: Michelle Karkos, stroke: Gretchen Swabe, Maria De Iuliis, Alex Watts, Emily Herzig, Regina Dutz, Emma Riegel, Hannah Olinger, and bow: Samantha Newhart also finished second (6:50.4) in their race behind Nova Southeastern (6:48.0). Third again was the University of Florida (7:02.5) and Villanova rounded out the field in fourth (7:03.0).



The women's novice eight of coxswain: Marie Clair, stroke: Maureen O'Brien, Emily Zborowski, Erin Sanborn, Rachel Swain, Marta Kessler, Shannon Dorr, Jenna Boyd, and bow: Megan Malone finished first in a two boat race against Villanova. In what proved to be a very tight race Duquesne pulled out to a lead in the last 500m and hung on to beat Villanova by a little more than 2 seconds (7:26.1 and 7:28.7 respectively).

The women's varsity four of coxswain: Megan Parmarter, stroke: Katherine Eastwood, Derin Ongun, Lindsay Wyllie, and Tory Snyder finished third in a time of 7:49.5. Nova Southeastern was first (7:25.9) Rollins was second (7:40.9) and Villanova finished fourth (8:05.1).

Duquesne then had two entries in the women's second varsity four. The "B" entry of coxswain: Kristy Pietrone, stroke: Maria De Iuliis, Liz Rhodes, Rachael Ross, and Laura Dunlap finished second after having trouble with a crab halfway through the race while the "A" entry finished fourth (coxswain: Mary Ketchner, stroke: Meredith Starczewski, Nicole Wozniak, Alyssa McKernan, Alexandra Poudrier). Nova Southern "A" was first (7:38.7), Duquesne "B" (7:44.5), Nova Southeastern "B" (7:51.8), Duquesne "A" (7:52.9), and Villanova (8:03.9) made up the five boat field.

There were three entries in the women's novice four. Rollins College finished first in 8:08.6, Duquesne finished second in 8:12.6 (coxswain: Marissa Gero, stroke: Marta Kessler, Rachel Swain, Erin Sanborn, Shannon Dorr), and Villanova finished third in 8:17.1.

Duquesne had a second novice four entry (coxswain: Grace Hindes, stroke: Mauren O'Brien, Megan Malone, Erin McDaniel, and Brittany Blackburn) that raced in the varsity lightweight four event finishing third behind the University of Florida and Villanova University.
