Crew Opens Season Strong at Dayton
March 26, 2007
Dayton, Ohio - In the spring opener, the Duquesne crew has a very strong showing taking five of seven events against Dayton on Saturday. The Dukes returned to waters for the first time since November as they faced the Flyers at Eastwood Lake Metropark because of river flooding.
The novice crew had their best showing of the year as the 4+ teams finished first and second with times of 6:48 and 7:07 respectively. The Red and Blue's novice 8+/quad crew also finished first and second as the 4x crossed in 6:52.9 and the 8+ right behind them finishing in 6:53.1.
In addition to the two first place finishes from the novice crew, DU had three more first place finishes. The lightweight 4+ came in at 6:33, the varsity 4+ rowed a 6:50 and lightweight 8+ finished at 6:07 (in race #2).
"We had a solid showing against a very formidable A-10 opponent," head coach Joe Setting said. "The Duquesne rowers really came out with a strong showing despite only having about a total of a week's on the water time since the first week in March."
Next up for the Dukes is the Knecht Cup in Camden, N.J. April 14 and 15.
