On Saturday, March 23rd Duquesne Rowing was in Indianapolis, IN for a scrimmage with teams from Ohio State, Purdue, Dayton, Marietta, and North Park. This was the first time the team had seen the site for the 2013 NCAA Rowing Championship and also the first time the team has raced against Ohio State who is ranked 6th in the first Coaches Poll of the spring for Division I institutions.

The first race of the day was the women's varsity 8 of coxswain: Kristy Pietrone, stroke: Lauren Turner, Courtney Purslow, Hannah Mazur, Marissa Conlin, Emma Riegel, Laura Dunlap, Hannah Olinger, and bow: Lauren Hughes. Crossing the line first was the A entry from Ohio State in 6:30.2. From there the finishing order was Ohio State B (6:40.8), Purdue (7:01.2), Duquesne (7:07.5), Marietta (7:14.9), Dayton (7:20.8), and North Park (9:08.1).

Next on the course was the women's second varsity eight of coxswain: Michelle Karkos, stroke: Gretchen Swabe, Maria De Iuliis, Alex Watts, Julia Borsari, Regina Dutz, Emily Herzig, Rachael Ross, and bow: Sam Newhart. After being pushed from their lane many times by other teams Duquesne finished third in 7:32.5 behind Ohio State (7:00.81) and Dayton (7:29.5). Closing out the field was Purdue in fourth (7:33.3) and Marietta in fifth (7:44.2).

 

 

The women's varsity four was a great race for Duquesne. Ohio State finished first in 7:54.6 with Duquesne's B entry (coxswain: Mary Ketchner, stroke: Lexie Poudrier, Liz Rhodes, Nicole Wozniak, and bow: Tory Snyder) finishing second in 8:13.8 and Duquesne's A entry (coxswain: Megan Parmarter, stroke: Katherine Eastwood, Derin Ongun, Lindsay Wyllie, and bow: Meredith Starczewski) finishing third in 8:18.3. Finishing fourth and fifth were Purdue's A and B entry in 8:45.6 and 9:06.3 respectively.

The final race of the day was the women's freshman/novice eight. The four boat race saw Ohio State crossing the line first in 7:08.3, with Purdue (7:23.7), Dayton (7:37.4), and Duquesne finishing fourth (7:42.8). Duquesne's line-up for this entry was coxswain: Mary Clair, stroke: Maureen O'Brien, Emily Zborowski, Erin Sanborn, Rachel Swain, Marta Kessler, Shannon Dorr, Jenna Boyd, and bow: Megan Malone.

The team is now preparing for the Occoquan Sprints in Fairfax, VA on Sunday, April 7th where they will race teams from George Mason, UNC, Delaware, Navy, Grand Valley State, and conference team La Salle.
