June 8, 2008

CAMDEN - For the first time in program history, the Lightweight 8+ competed in the national championship at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta.

The Lightweight 8+, participated in three races - heat, the repechage, and the petite final.

DU began Friday's races with by taking fifth place. The crew crossed with a time of 7:39.602. In the repachage, the Dukes took fifth with a time of 7:16.833.

In the petite final, held on Saturday, the Dukes had a third place finish with a time of 7:19.082.

The Lighweight 8+ finished the season 13th in the USRowing coaches poll.

"I'm very optimistic about the future of our lightweight rowing. The most important aspect of this year's participation was to get our younger, underclassman rowers the experience of racing against fellow nationally ranked lightweight 8's," said coach Joe Setting. "Having the opportunity to go to the IRA is very new to the Duquesne program, but this season really served as the first building block to solidifying our lightweight program as a consistent national competitor. It will continue to grow, and I am looking forward to next season, as we return 6 rowers from this IRA boat."
