Varsity Eight Takes First at RMU Invite
Oct. 31, 2011
On Saturday the Duquesne Women traveled to Crescent, PA to take part in the Robert Morris Invitational with the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon and Robert Morris University. Mercyhurst was also in attendance with their novice rowers.
While the wintery mix of snow and rain made for a chilly morning, the women's varsity eights launched for their race against an eight from Robert Morris and Pitt. Over the 4,300 meter course the 1st varsity eight for Duquesne got out front early and continued to dominate the race finishing first by a large margin over the varsity eight from the University of Pittsburgh. The Duquesne 2nd varsity eight began strong attaining open water over Pitt over the first half of the course, but had trouble maintaining their lead and fell back over the second half finishing bow to stern with Pitt. Robert Morris finished fourth by an undisclosed margin. Result times are not available at this time.
Due to a very high flow on the Ohio the Duquesne coaching staff felt that it would not be safe to send novices and fours out to race and packed up to head home after the varsity eights got off the water.
The team is looking forward to its final race of the season, the Head of the Occoquan. They will travel to Fairfax, VA this weekend to race teams from George Mason, George Washington, Delaware, Georgetown and others, and will also have the opportunity to go up against WVU for the second time this season.
