Varisty Eight Competes in Head of the Schuylkill
Oct. 31, 2012
In light of the situation that took place at the Head of the Genessee Regatta, the women's varsity eight traveled to Philadelphia this past weekend to take part in the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta. The Robert Morris Invitational for the rest of the team was unfortunately cancelled.
In the very last event of the day on Saturday the eight of coxswain: Megan Parmarter, stroke: Lauren Turner, Courtney Purslow, Hannah Mazur, Julia Borsari, Alex Watts, Laura Dunlap, Rachael Ross, and bow: Gretchen Swabe raced against some fast teams from Michigan State, Navy, Temple, Old Dominion, and WVU. The Dukes finished 10th overall in a field of 27. Just 15 seconds separated 4th through 10th place with Duquesne (14:27.80) just 8 seconds off of Temple (14:19.75) in 7th and 11 seconds ahead of WVU (14:38.99) in 12th. The Dukes also finished ahead of conference foes Fordham by 13 seconds and La Salle by 27 seconds. Big Ten team Michigan State won the event in 13:56.45.
This weekend the team will travel to Fairfax, VA to race in the Head of the Occoquan Regatta where they will square off against teams from George Washington, Saint Joseph University, La Salle, George Mason, and Navy to name a few. This will be the first race for many of Duquesne's novice rowers.
