Northeastern Edges Dukes, 1-0, at Vermont Invite

Burlington, Vermont - Duquesne University's women's soccer team's strong attack wasn't enough as the Northeastern Huskies edged the Dukes, 1-0, Saturday afternoon at Vermont's 2006 TD Banknorth Soccer Classic on UV's Centennial Field.

Seven of Duquesne's nine shots were on goal; all were stopped by NU's Annie Petrofsky in the CAA team's season opener. DU senior Ginny Bondi recorded three saves allowing only Jenna Lucchessi's 14-footer past the goal line with just under 10 minutes left in the first half.

Juniors Audra Mathews and Faye Rasmussen and sophomore Shelley Esposito each got off two shots.

The Dukes (0-1-1) travel to Washington, D.C. next weekend for the D.C. Classic hosted by Georgetown. Duquesne will face American U. on Friday, September 1st at 12:00 noon and then take on the host Hoyas, Sunday, Sept. 3, 2006, at 3:00 p.m. George Mason is the fourth team in this event.
