DU Women's Soccer Wins Akron Title

Akron, Ohio - Duquesne University's women's soccer team won the Akron Caroline Pardee Invite Championship Sunday afternoon at Lee Jackson Field on the Zips campus. The tournament title was determined by a shootout after the game was still tied at 1-1 after overtime. The Dukes, who are now 1-0-1, outscored Akron 4-2 for invitational's championship.
Four Dukes were named to the All-Tournament team: senior midfielder Lauren Bracco (Dix Hills, N.Y./ Half Hollow Hills West), sophomore forward/ midfielder Erica Carey (Wilmington, N.C./ J.T. Hoggard), freshman goaltender Virginia Bondi (Strongsville, Ohio/ Strongsville) and junior defender Caitlin Holmes (Loveland, Ohio/ Loveland).
Akron opened the scoring early when junior Mirka Mohs found the net at 1:13 off a pass from Beth Riggs. The Zips' defense held onto the 1-0 edge until the 65:10 mark when the Dukes' Julie Broden scored into the Akron goal. Bracco assisted on the tying score.
Both squads had several opportunities to score during the remainder of regulation and the two overtime sessions, but were unable to convert.
Duquesne's Virginia Bondi spent all 110 minutes in net, had three saves and held off the Zips in the championship deciding shootout. UA goalkeeper Crystal Tabor also went the distance in goal, recording three saves.
IPFW defeated Howard 4-1 in Sunday's consolation match.
