Big Second Half Lifts Canisius Over Women's Soccer 2-0

PITTSBURGH - Canisius' Brianna Smith's goal in the 52nd minute broke a 0-0 tie and the Katie Griffin added an insurance goal six minutes later to lead the Griffins to a 2-0 win over the Duquesne women's soccer team on Friday night at Rooney Field. After playing a scoreless first half, Canisius had the first chance to strike in the second half when Smith was stopped by a diving Ashley Szalwinski in the 48th minute. Two minutes later, Morgan Herbert had a chance in the box, but could not handle the cross. On the next possession, Kelli McMahon's found Smith at the 20-yard line. Her long shot found the left side of the net to put CC up 1-0. In the 58th minute, Brooke Bandazian's header was punched out by Szalwinski, but Griffin took the header past the Dukes' keeper to make the score 2-0. Keeper Megan Tock made 10 saves for Canisius (2-6-0) and Szalwinski eight for Duquesne (2-5-1). The Dukes outshot the Golden Griffins 19-14 and had eight corner kicks to CC's four. The Dukes hit the road for a Sunday afternoon match at Kent State. Kickoff is at 1:00 p.m. Duquesne vs. Canisius
