Sept. 15, 2002
OLEAN, NEW YORK - Duquesne's women's soccer team picked up their first win on the season as the Dukes shut out Manhattan College 3-0 Sunday afternoon at the St. Bonaventure Classic at the Bonnies' McGraw-Jennings Field. Sophomore Katie Schwager's (Akron, Ohio / Walsh Jesuit) goal, her second this year, and an assist enabled the Dukes to raise their early season record to 1-4-0.
The Dukes scored two goals in the first 15 minutes to take an early 2-0 lead. Freshman Jennifer LaCava (Novelty, Ohio / West Geauga) got the Dukes on the scoreboard with a goal off an assist from senior Erin Marshall (Mt. Lebanon, Pa. / Mt. Lebanon) at the 5:58 mark. Schwager scored her second marker of the season on a penalty kick at 13:15 to put Duquesne ahead by two goals at the break.
Duquesne added another goal in the second half when junior Carol Ferkovic (Highland Heights, Ohio / Beaumont) scored off a pass from Schwager at 74:56 to extend the lead to 3-0. Senior Kristin Scharphorn (Niskayuna, N.Y. / Niskayuna) made four saves for the Dukes.
Manhattan (0-3-1) was held to four shots but used their opportunities efficiently; all their attempts were directed between the pipes. Duquesne got off 20 shots with 11 heading for the goal. Lady Jaspers goalkeeper Jeaane Marie Gilbert had eight saves.
The Dukes three goals were their first scores since Schwager netted a shot in the second half of the season opener at Southern Methodist.
St. Bonaventure held off St. Francis (PA), 3-2, to claim the Classic title. The Bonnies had topped Manhattan 3-1 on Friday.
Duquesne's next meet Robert Morris (0-5-0) on Wednesday, September 18th at 4:00 p.m. on the Colonials' turf in Coraopolis, Pa.
