Red and Blue Outscore Robert Morris, 6-3
Sept. 22, 2004
The Duquesne women's soccer team jumped out to a 5-0 lead and held on to win, 6-3 at Robert Morris Wednesday evening.
Senior Katie Schwager recorded a hat trick for the Dukes scoring the only two goals in the first half and adding a third in the second frame. Sophomore Ashley Stelmak and freshmen Kelly Reed and Audra Mathews also found the net for DU.
Schawger's first goal came at 11:03 when her shot hit the right post and went in after a pass from Mathews. Schwager then picked off a RMU clearance attempt and buried a 20-yard shot into the upper right netting at 39:18.
The Dukes didn't waste any time in the second half as Mathews gave Kelly Reed a breakaway just 1:28 into the stanza. Reed finished the play to make it 3-0. Schwager finished her hat-trick at 50:48 with penalty-kick goal to the top right corner of the net. Mathews then scored a goal at 57:56 on a Faye Rasmussen feed to make it 5-0.
The Colonials (0-6-1) tried to mount a comeback with just under 30 minutes remaining. Hilary Nellis scored on a long-shot that went over Duquesne goalie Virginia Bondi at 60:06. Just 3:07 later, Stephanie Kuhn closed the gap to 5-2 when she took a back pass from Nellis and found the net from 12 yards out.
The Dukes (5-4-0), however, responded quickly when Ashley Stelmak snuck a shot past the near post on a feed from Justine Itte just 2:09 after Kuhn's goal. Nicole Hilderbrand got the last point with 5:32 remaining when she scored off an indirect kick just inside the Duquesne penalty area.
The Red and Blue open Atlantic 10 Conference play on Sunday, Sept. 26 as they host St. Bonaventure at 1:00 pm on Rooney Field.
