Women's Soccer Crushes Xavier, 4-0
Oct. 16, 2009
PITTSBURGH - The Duquesne women's soccer team ended a six-match slide after their 4-0 win over Xavier Friday night. Shaina Geisler recorded a pair of goals for the Dukes (4-9-0, 1-5-0) who recorded their third consecutive win over the Musketeers (2-12-1, 1-5-1).
It didn't take DU long to get on the board as Gia Marino and Lauren Ott set up Geisler for a header goal just 1:36 into the match. Geisler almost scored in the 13th minutes, but a sliding save by XU keeper Kelly Farrell kept the score at 1-0.
Geisler and Marino teamed up again in the 26th minute to give Duquesne a 2-0 lead. Seven minutes later, Morgan Herbert scored her first career goal off a free kick from 25 yards out to give the Dukes a commanding 3-0 advantage.
The Dukes controlled the flow of the match the rest of way, only giving up five total shots. Paige Maroney scored her first career goal in the final minute to finish off XU 4-0.
Geisler now has nine points on the season - all in conference play. She finished the match with five shots and nearly missed recording the hat trick when her shot in the 24th minutes hit the post.
The Dukes will face Dayton on Sunday as part of a double-header with the men's team. Kickoff is at 2:30 p.m.
