Dukes Suffer 2-1 Loss to URI
Oct. 29, 2004
The Dukes women's soccer team suffered a 2-1 loss at the hands of visiting Rhode Island (9-8-2, 6-2-2) Friday night on a rain-soaked Rooney Field. Duquesne (8-10-1, 3-6-1) held a 1-0 lead at the half. Freshman Audra Mathews notched the Dukes' goal in the 10th minute from senior Katie Schwager.
The Dukes saw several scoring opportunities slip by, something that seems to have become a habit as of late. In the first half, Faye Rasmussen saw two shots stopped as the URI keeper, Ria Carroll, made a solid sliding save in the 30th minute before a fast-break shot went just wide in the waning minutes of the first frame. Keeper Virginia Bondi, who posted eight stops, made an excellent save in the 12th minute of the first half diving far right to stop the potential goal.
Rhode Island played solid and consistent ball in the second frame, despite being out-shot 12-8 in period two. Debra Nelson hit both scores in the stanza notching the tying goal in the 60th minute and the deciding score in the 76th minute. Nicole Nanchoff had a shot go just over the cross bar in the 50th minute and Mathews went just wide with a kick-out shot give from a botched keeper stop in the 72nd minute.
Duquesne held a 20-16 edge on shots for the contest.
The Dukes close out the regular season this Sunday, Oct. 31, hosting UMass in a 1:00 pm start for Senior Day.
