Dukes Suffer 3-2 Loss to Xavier on Senior Day
Nov. 2, 2003
The Dukes women's soccer team suffered a 3-2 Atlantic 10 loss to visiting Xavier (11-7-1, 7-4-0) Sunday afternoon on Rooney Field in the 2003 regular season finale. The heartbreaking loss put a damper on Senior Day for six Dukes who played their final home game.
Lauren Bracco (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hallow Hills West) tied the contest on a penalty kick in the 29th minute to give her 10 on the season and 16 on her career, which now puts her first all-time on the Duquesne career goals list. Martine Gilbert (Wilmington, N.C./J.T. Hoggard) scored the Dukes second goal from Katie Schwager (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) in the 49th minute.
Xavier's Meredith Frendt put the Musketeers up 1-0 in the 11th minute before Bracco's penalty kick score in the 29th for a 1-1 tie. The Dukes went up 2-1 as Gilbert headed in a ball from Katie Schwager in the 49th minute before the Musketeer's Angie Scarlato hit an unassisted goal in the 68th minute for the 2-2 tie. What seemed to be an excellent team save by Becky Barritt in the 81st minute in front of the goal was credited a goal to Frendt for a 3-2 Xavier lead and the final.
The Dukes conclude the regular season 8-10-2 overall, 4-6-1 in Atlantic 10 play for their most successful season since 1999.
