Dukes Fall in Season Finale at La Salle, 2-1
Nov. 3, 2002
Duquesne's women's soccer team ended its 2002 slate with a 2-1 loss at La Salle.
Senior Erin Marshall (Mt. Lebanon, Pa. / Mt. Lebanon) scored the lone Duquesne goal while fellow senior Krisitin Scharphorn (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) made six saves in goal.
The game was scoreless until the 49th minutes when Explorers' sophomore Rachael Tobin sent a cross to the middle of the box from the left-hand corner; senior Liz Schmidt headed the ball home for her first goal of the season to give La Salle a 1-0 lead.
Duquesne tied the game just 11 minutes later when Marshall lined up a free kick from 25 yards away, just to the right of La Salle keeper Marisa Suarez. Marshall cleared La Salle's five-person wall and bent the ball into the left upper-90 to notch a 60th-minute equalizer.
La Salle, who had many chances cleared off the line by the Duquesne defense and by the great goalkeeping play of Scharphorn, was able to notch the game-winner in the 87th minute of the contest. With the ball bouncing around in the Duquesne box, the ball found its way to senior Amy Schneider's foot. La Salle's most prolific scorer (40-33-113) played the ball to her feet before tucking the ball past the outstretched arms of Scharphorn for her eighth goal of the season to end the year on a winning note.
Duquesne ends the season with a 5-13-1 record, 1-9-1 in conference play. La Salle completes the 2002 slate 9-8-1 overall, 6-5-0 in A10 play.
