Dukes Swim to Third Place after Day Two of Four at A-10's

Duquesne's women's swimming team climbed from sixth place to third place in day two action at the 2009 Atlantic 10 Championship. The Red and Blue broke three school records on the day as senior Christina Sherrard was crowned an A-10 champion.

Sophomore Erin Sykes opened the evening with a second place showing in the 500-yard freestyle with a school record time of 4:57.21. Earlier in the day, she had broken the school record in the preliminaries with a time of 4:59.26. Also scoring team points in the event for the Dukes were junior Anne Hayles, freshman Amanda McClelland and sophomore Angela Majkut.

In the next race, sophomore Kirstie Shumaker captured fourth place in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:05.11. Also scoring team points were freshman Monique Lefort and sophomore Brianna Mangis.

In the final individual race of the day, Sherrard finished first overall in the 50 freestyle to claim the gold with a school record time of 23.34. Fellow senior sprinter Katrina Streiner placed third with a personal best time of 23.47.

The Dukes wrapped up day two with another school record, placing second in the 200 free relay in 1:34.21. Taking the medal stand were Sherrard, McClelland, Shumaker and Streiner.

Day three action will begin Friday morning at 10:30 am with time trials in five events, followed by the finals at 6:30 pm in six events.
