Dukes in Sixth Place of Nine After Day One of A-10's

The women's swimming team finished day one action of the Atlantic 10 Championship in sixth place of nine teams with 88 team points. Both the 200-yard freestyle relay team and the 400-yard medley relay team broke their school records set earlier in the day and finished in fourth place in both heats scoring 30 points each. The 200 free team finished in 1:37.27 while the 400 medley team turned in a time of 3:55.66. Junior Alicia Smith broke the school 100-yard backstroke record in the first leg of the 400 medley race with a time of 59.35. Other individual highlights included freshman Amy Gersbach's eighth place finish (11 points) and junior Kathy Smucler's 11th place finish (six points) in the 500-yard freestyle. The Dukes also captured 11 points in the 50-yard freestyle with sophomore Laura Kephart placing 12th in 24.53, sophomore Deidre Rodeheaver finishing 13th in 24.66 and freshman Elizabeth Barba placing 15th in 24.73. Day two preliminary action will begin Friday at 10:30 am with the finals beginning at 6:30 pm.
