Oct. 19, 2013
Duquesne swimming team opened the 2013-14 season with an exciting home meet Saturdat afternoon at Towers Pool. The Dukes lost 149-112 to Richmond and fell to Oakland, 131-130 on the meet's final race.
"This was a benchmark meet for us," said head coach David Sheets. "Although it was early in the season against two great teams it gave us an idea of where we are and what we have to do to get where we want to be."
"This meet was a true team effort where every swimmer on our roster contributed" Sheets continued. "This was fun today."
The Dukes and Grizzlies exchanged leads six times during the 14-event meet with Oakland taking the final advantage. With Duquesne leading 126-118, OU captured first place overall in the final race with a time of 1:38.17 in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
The Red and Blue quartet of Samantha Ray, Molly O'Brien, Claire Nobles and Meghan Smith were second, just 0.16 seconds behind. Richmond took third and fourth and Oakland took fifth, a half second ahead of Duquesne to gain the additional two team points they would need to beat the Dukes.
The Dukes had two individual winners as Meghan Smith took first in the 200 free in 1:55.57 and Line Lovberg won the 200 butterfly in a Towers Pool record time of 2:04.62. Smith, Ray, Lovberg and Morgan Fink also grabbed second place showings.
The Dukes return to action on Saturday, Oct. 26 as they travel to St. Francis (Pa.) for a noon meet.
