CLARION, Pa. – Duquesne swimming and diving head coach Dave Sheets will be inducted into the 2017 Clarion University Sports Hall of Fame, as announced by Clarion University this week.
Sheets, a 1994 graduate, was a 20-time NCAA Division II All-American, garnering nine Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference titles under former head coach Bill Miller. Additionally, Sheets helped Clarion to its best finish in program history, taking second place at the NCAA DII Nationals in 1992.
A captain during his senior season, Sheets was a standout in the backstroke and the individual medley events for the Golden Eagles. He was a two-time individual winner in the PSAC Championship in the 100 and 200 backstroke in 1992. In the same season, he went on to nationals and was a 7-time All-American, placing 3rd in the 200 backstroke, 5th in the 100 backstroke and 9th in the I.M., while also competing in four All-America relays.
“Swimming has always been a huge part of my life,” said Sheets. “Being recognized for my achievements as a collegiate swimmer is very humbling. Looking back on all of the people who were instrumental in my swimming success makes this honor even more special. I congratulate the other inductees and look forward to joining them in May.”
The 2015 Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year, Sheets is in his 16th year with Duquesne. In 2016 and 2017 he led the Dukes to back-to-back program runner-up finishes in the A-10 Championship.
Under his leadership, Duquesne has announced the reinstatement of the diving program for the start of the 2017-2018 season, which will further enhance the championship profile of the current Duquesne swimming program.
The annual Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will be held on Friday, May 5 at Clarion University.
