On Saturday, April 21st, the Duquesne women's swim team in cooperation with Chatham University Athletics hosted children aged 6 to 10 from Hazelwood's Center of Life at the Chatham University swimming pool.

"Duquesne Swimming and Chatham Athletics are very excited about the "Reach One, Teach One" program and the opportunity to give back to one of Pittsburgh's oldest communities," said Coach Sheets. "Swimming is a great sport but it is also a very important life-skill for those that never swim competitively. We hope this program blossoms into a community event that future Duquesne swim teams embrace."

The Center's mission is to provide families and youth with the life-skills, education, training, and resources necessary to be strong and to make their communities stronger. The Dukes have created a program, "Reach One, Teach One", to promote the life-skill of swimming. The swimmers provided some basic swimming lessons to the group in a safe and fun environment. Following the lessons and some "fun time" in the water, the children were treated to lunch.

"To have the opportunity to involve ourselves with the children from the Hazelwood Center of Life, see their smiles and watch the athletes work with them was truly a rewarding experience for everyone involved," said Sheets. "Swimming is not only a sport but a life long activity that everyone should be able to enjoy. 'Reach, one, Teach one' is something that Duquesne Swimming and Chatham Athletics will embrace from year-to-year."
