CLARION, Pa. – Duquesne swimming and diving head coach David Sheets has been inducted into the 2017 Clarion University Sports Hall of Fame.
Sheets, a 1994 Clarion graduate, was one of seven members honored at the annual Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony held at Clarion University on Friday evening.
"So much of my growth as a swimmer came from the people around me,” said Sheets. “I'm so blessed to have been part of the best men's team in Clarion history, and train with some of the best we ever had."
A 20-time NCAA Division II All-American, Sheets garnered nine Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference titles under former head coach Bill Miller. Additionally, he helped Clarion to its best finish in program history, taking second place at the NCAA DII Nationals in 1992.
A captain during his senior season, Sheets was a standout in the backstroke and the individual medley events for the Golden Eagles. He was a two-time individual winner in the PSAC Championship in the 100 and 200 backstroke in 1992. In the same season, he went on to nationals and was a 7-time All-American, placing 3rd in the 200 backstroke, 5th in the 100 backstroke and 9th in the I.M., while also competing in four All-America relays.
