SATURDAY'S RESULT: Duquesne 4, Akron 3
QUICK RECAP: The Duquesne women's tennis team swept a weekend series to improve to 5-5 on the season.
On Saturday, the Dukes defeated Akron in a hard-fought 4-3 battle at LaTuchie Tennis Center. This was the first victory over the Zips since 2008. The Dukes jumped ahead in the doubles point with the team of Chandler Consonery and Megan Wasson making quick work of Caroline Harpaintner and Marta Briega, 8-0 at the #3 spot. The team of Sarah Shashura and Zuzanna Stelmaszak fell at #1 doubles, 8-2 against Shannon Newnes and Olga Shkundina. The deciding point came down to #2 doubles, where Judy Li and Alexa Miller were 8-4 winners over Karolina Maksimava/Martina Zerbola.
In singles, Li was the first to finished after defeating Maksimava 6-0, 6-1 at #1. Sarah Shashura got back on the winning track with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Briega at #6. Miller clinched the 4th and deciding point at #2 singles with a 6-1, 7-6 (10-6) win over Shkundina.
The Dukes remained at LaTuchie Tennis Center to play former Atlantic 10 opponent Butler in a neutral site match on Sunday.
The doubles point was swept by Duquesne, with the teams of Spencer Caravaggio and Stelmaszak over Stephanie McLoughlin and Kailey Eaton at #1, Miller and Li over Grace Hyde and Angelina Qin at #2 and Consonery and Wasson defeating Konstantina Adami and Jocelyn Koester at #3.
In singles, the Dukes only dropped two sets. Li made it a perfect weekend with a 6-1, 6-2 win over McLoughlin at #1. Miller was also perfect on the weekend after defeating Hyde 6-2, 6-2 at #2. Stelmaszak took out Adami at #3 7-6 (10-3), 6-4. After falling in a 1st set tiebreaker, Consonery battled back to win at #4 6-7, 6-1, 10-3 against Eaton. Alrissa Tobe also made a comeback, winning over Qin 5-7, 6-4, 11-9 at #5. Shashura was a straight set winner over Koestler 6-1, 6-4 at #6.
Up next is the 2014 City Match against the University of Pittsburgh. The Dukes and Panthers meet at Alpha Tennis and Fitness of Pittsburgh on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
