YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The Duquesne women's tennis team improved to 11-7 overall after its 7-0 shutout of Youngstown State 7-0 on Tuesday afternoon. The match was played outside, only the second outdoors events for the Dukes this season.
The teams split the doubles matches with Megan O'Sullivan and Judy Li falling 8-4 to Marta Burka and Carolyn Jesko at the #1 spot and Vanessa Steiner and Tara Majdalani defeating Laruen Hankel and Gimena Puppo 8-3 at #2. Due to only having five student-athletes on the roster, YSU forfeited #3 doubles.
At #1 singles, Steiner won a hard-fought match against Burak, who came in with a singles record of 13-7 and had won five of her previous six matches. After dropping the first set 6-2, she came back to take the second set 6-4. This forced a 10-point tiebreaker. With the score tied 6-6, Steiner won four of the next points to win the tiebreaker 10-8.
A similar outcome at #2 singles, as O'Sullivan and Hankel split the first two sets - 6-3 to O'Sullivan and 6-2 to Hankle. In the tiebreaker, O'Sullivan prevailed 10-6.
In one of the best comebacks of the season, Li dropped the first set 6-0 and was down 3-0 in the second set before fighting back to win 6-4 at #3 singles. In the tiebreaker, Li prevailed 10-6.
The Dukes return to Alpha Tennis and Fitness of Pittsburgh on April 4th for the City Game versus the University of Pittsburgh. Match time is noon. The regular season wraps up at Robert Morris on April 10th.
