Women's Tennis Falls in City Game to Pitt 4-3

HARMAR, Pa. - The Duquesne women's tennis team fell to the University of Pittsburgh 4-3 on Wednesday afternoon in the annual City Game held at Alpha Tennis and Fitness of Pittsburgh.
The Dukes, who had won 8-of-9 matches coming into today's contest, fall to 11-8 overall heading into the season finale at Robert Morris on Tues. Apr. 10th.
The doubles point was exciting as Tara Majdalani and Chandler Consonery were 8-6 winners over Amanda and Molly Wickman at the #3 spot before the #1 team of Megan O'Sullivan and Judy Li fell to Jocelyn Lu and Taylor Washington 8-6. The double point came down to the #2 match - Vanessa Steiner and Paula Gruber for the Dukes and Gabrielle Catanzariti and Kimmy Borza for the Panthers.
With DUQ winning 8-7 and Steiner serving, Pitt was able to break serve forcing a tiebreaker. Duquesne would take early leads of 2-1, 3-2 and 4-3. Pittsburgh would come back, winning the next two points to grab the lead at 5-4. Gruber aced the next point followed by a Steiner overhead to regain the lead for the Dukes at 6-5. The Panthers would tie it up at 6-6, but DUQ would win the next two points to take the match 9-8 and give Duquesne the double point.
In singles, Pitt quickly tied the match at 1-1 after Washington defeated Li 6-1, 6-1 at the #3 position. O'Sullivan's 6-4, 6-3 victory at #2 over Catanzariti put the back ahead at 2-1. After dropping the first set 6-2, Steiner came back to capture the #1 singles point over Lu, winning the second and third sets 6-1, 6-3. Majdalani fell at the #5 spot in a tight match against Molly Wickman 7-6, 7-6.
With two matches to play, Duquesne was leading 3-2.
Both Consonery at #4 and Gruber at #6 were first set winners over Amanda Wickman and Borza respectively, but both Pitt players pulled out second and third set victories to give the Panthers a 4-3 match win.
After the RMU match, Duquesne will begin its quest for the 2012 Atlantic 10 Championship which begins on Apr. 19th in Charlottesville, Va.
