Dukes Lose To #3 UMass In A-10 Championships

April 16, 2004

Results

College Park, Maryland - Duquesne University's women's tennis team was topped by Massachusetts, 4-0, Friday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic 10 Championship Tournament at the Tennis Center of College Park.

UMass, the tournament's number 3 seed, was able to gain a hard-fought doubles point to open the competition and then won three singles matches to clinch the victory. Seniors Alina Klinova (Moscow, Russia / W1278) and Katie Riedinger (Plum Borough, Pa. / Plum) saw their matches suspended when the Minutewomen clinched the win. Reidinger was ahead 6-4, 4-1 at #2 while Klinova had evened her match (4-6, 6-3) which would have forced a third and deciding set.

The Dukes, the tourney's sixth seed, now move to the consolation bracket and will face #8 Fordham at 1 p.m. Saturday. The Rams topped #9 Rhode Island, 4-0, before losing to #1 Richmond, 4-0, in the quarters.

The winner of Saturday afternoon's match will face either George Washington (#5) or Dayton (#7) for fifth place on Sunday at 8 a.m.
