Dukes Tops Fordham 4-2 for 7th Place
April 19, 2003
College Park, Maryland - With Duquesne up 3-2, sophomore Sarah Shanahan (Columbus, OH / Bishop Watterson) topped Fordham's Danielle Spigner (1-6, 6-4, 6-3) to clinch seventh place at the 2003 Atlantic 10 Women's Tennis Championship Saturday at The Tennis Center at College Park in College Park, Maryland. Junior Katie Riedinger (Plum Borough, Pa. / Plum), redshirt freshman Diana Stein (Powell, Ohio / Village Academy / SMU) and senior Leia Zingone (Lindenhurst, N.Y. / St. Anthony's) earlier straight-set singles victories gave the Dukes the one point edge as Shanahan completed her competition. The Red and Blue had lost to fifth-seeded host George Washington 4-1 Friday evening with senior Marina Zelenovic (Belgrade, Yugoslavia / 11th H.S. of Belgrade / Missouri) picking up the lone singles win (3-6, 6-4, 6-2) over the Colonials Lindy First. Since the outcome had been decided in both matches, doubles sets were not played in either competition. The Temple Owls, who had topped the Red and Blue in the quarterfinals, are the league champions as they topped Massachusetts 4-1 in the title match. Saturday's win evened seventh-seeded Duquesne's match record at the rain-delayed event to 2-2; DU faced higher ranked opponents in all four rounds. Championships Results
