Dukes Split on First Day of Atlantic 10 Women's Tennis Championships

April 20, 2007

Fordham Results | Charlotte Results

Pittsburgh, Pa. - Duquesne University's women's tennis team, the number six seed in this week's Atlantic 10 Championship Tournament, shut out #11 Fordham, 4-0, on Friday before losing to the number three seed, Charlotte, by an identical score, at Club 4 Life in Monroeville, Pa.

The matches opened up with doubles competition. Against Fordham, Duquesne's teams of junior Johanna Bezjak & sophomore Rachel McGowan, and junior Andrea Sailer & sophomore Alex Albano won their games, 8-2 and 9-7, respectively, to give the Red and Blue a 1-0 edge heading into the singles contests. Sophomore Beckie Poole, Sailer and McGowan all won in straight sets to clinch the Dukes' first round win.

In the quarterfinals, senior Jackie Hughes and Poole were the only DU pair of three to win at doubles. Poole was one game away from winning her singles match with Charlotte's Ali Piacente, but the competition was called after UNCC won three one-on-one contests.

Duquesne, now in the consolation bracket, takes on number seven Saint Louis Saturday, April 21st at 10:30 a.m. at Club 4 Life, the Dukes' home court and site of last week's A-10 men's tennis championship.
