Women's Tennis Defeats Saint Joseph's

College Park, Md. - The Duquesne women's tennis team opened the Atlantic 10 Championship Friday moring with a 4-0 victory over Saint Joseph's led by Jackie Hughes and Sarah Shanahan. The Dukes advance to face top seeded Massachusetts at approximately 1:00 pm this afternoon. Action was held indoors at The Tennis Center at College Park due to inclement weather.

The Dukes started the morning off winning the doubles point as Hughes and Alicia McNamara won 8-0 at first doubles and Shanahan and Ciara McDermott took an 8-2 decision at thrid doubles.

Johanna Bezjak took straight 6-1 sets at first singles for a 2-0 edge while Hughes won 6-4, 6-2 at second singles and Shanahan won 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 4 spot. Julie Wagner was leading 6-4, 3-1 at third doubles, but did not need to finish as matches are stopped once the winner is determined at the Atlantic 10 Championships.

The win puts Duquesne 6-9 this spring and 10-10 on the year.
