Dukes Top Rams, 4-2, In Final A-10 Match

College, Maryland - The eighth-seeded Duquesne University's women's tennis team finished seventh overall after winning their final match of the Atlantic 10 Championships with a 4-2 victory over #7 Fordham Sunday morning at The Tennis Center at College Park. Senior Sarah Shanahan and sophomore Ciara McDermott were perfect on the day as each won at singles and teamed for a doubles win.
Duquesne opened the contest by capturing the doubles point as freshman Johanna Bezjak & senior Julie Wagner topped Doina Sandor & Danielle Spigner and Shanahan & McDermott beat Liz Murray & Lisa Vulin, both by 8-4 scores. Fordhman's Ellendira Featherston & Christina Papa won their doubles match with Jackie Hughes & Alicia McNamara, again by an 8-4 score.
Hughes', Shanahan's and McDermott's singles wins closed out Fordham's chances. In straight set wins, Hughes beat Papa, 6-4, 7-5, and McDermott topped Murray, 6-4, 6-2. Shanahan needed three sets to gain her second W of the day, a 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 win over Vulin. The match between McNamara and Spigner was suspended when DU's fourth point was secured; their third set was tied 1-1 when play was halted.
Duquesne, the number 8 seed, was 2-2 this weekend at the A-10 tournament winning seventh place with Sunday's win. Shanahan (5-1) and McDermott (3-1) won both of their doubles matches that went to conclusion. The junior was 3-1 in singles and the soph was 1-1 in these one-on-one contests.
No. 2 Richmond, the defending champion, won its third conference title in four years with a 5-1 win over #1 Massachusetts.
