Women's Tennis Opens Season at CMU Invite

The Duquesne women's tennis team opened the 2006 season at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational Sept. 8-9 in Oakland. Senior Jackie Hughes and freshman Rachel McGowan won their flight's consolation bracket - Hughes in No. 1 singles and McGowan at second singles.
Hughes won her opening set 6-2, 6-1 before falling 6-4, 6-0 to be sent to consolation play where she won 6-3, 6-4 over CMU's Amy Staloch.
Rebecca Poole fell in her first set at No. 2 singles, but went 3-0 in the lower bracket winning the lower (loser's) bracket title. McGowan bounced back from a 6-3 loss to take a 6-1, 10-2 margin at No. 2 singles, but fell 6-2, 6-3 in her second match sending her to consolation play where she captured a 6-1, 6-3 victory over CMU's Alisa Liebowitz.
McGowan and Johanna Bezjak teamed up in No. 2 doubles play and took an 8-2 win over Robert Morris' Newman / Shaw, and defeated Pitt's Smith / Davis 8-0 in the final for the No. 2 doubles title. Poole and Hughes suffered an 8-4 loss at No. 1 doubles to Pitt's Borza / Friedman but rebounded to defeat Kravits / Delorie of Robert Morris 8-1 for the consolation title.
The Dukes compete next at the Bucknell Invite Sept. 29-30.
