Duquesne University's women's tennis team defeated a tough Niagara University squad, 4-3, in Saturday's season opener for both at the Oxford Athletic Club in Monroeville, Pa.

Freshman Johanna Bezjak (Salisbury, Md. / James M. Bennett), who with sophomore Ciara McDermott (Columbus, Ohio / The Wellington School) captured the Dukes' only doubles victory, broke a 3-3 tie at number three singles with a 6-1, 6-1 straight set win over the Purple Eagles' Jacquelyn Cary to give Coach Joe Camillo's athletes their first win.

Niagara, from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, extended their edge after doubles play to 2-0 when Miriam Al-Shikarchy defeated sophomore Jackie Hughes (McKeesport, Pa. / McKeesport), 6-0, 6-2, at No. 1. The Dukes scored their first point in the dusk time competition when sophomore Alicia McNamara (Voorhees, N.J. / Pendleton School) topped Shella Dargout, 6-0, 6-1, at number 4.

Senior Julie Wagner's (Erie, Pa. / General McLane) 6-4, 6-2 win over Paige Welch at number 6 tied the match (2-2) and then classmate Sarah Shanahan (Columbus, Ohio / Bishop Watterson) took Julianne Prokopich, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 4 to give the Red and Blue their first lead of the day at 3-2.

Niagara knotted the competition at 3-3 when Kendra Daigler defeated freshman Andrea Sailer (Tucson, Ariz. / Salpointe Catholic), 6-3, 6-2, at No. 2. Her classmate then took the event decider.

The Dukes return to action on Tuesday, September 14th when they travel to Youngstown State for a 3:00 p.m. contest against the Horizon League program. Niagara is staying in the Burgh for a Sunday battle with the Pittsburgh Panthers.
