Williams, McGowan Sweep Through

MORGANTOWN - The Duquesne women's tennis team participated in the Martha Thorn Invite held on the campus of West Virginia University this weekend.

Zena Williams and Rachel McGowan each had a pair of wins in the "A" singles bracket. Williams was a 6-4, 6-1 winner over Heather Isbell of Presbyterian and 6-4, 6-2 winner over West Virginia's Ashley Pilsfbury. McGowan defeated Presby's Cara Caruso 7-5, 6-4 before scoring a 7-6, 6-2 win over Morehead State's Alexandra Rydberg. Although the two Dukes were slated to meet in the final, they did not play due to a coach's decision.

In the "B" singles, Tara Majdalani was a 6-4, 6-3 winner over MSU's Meg Rozboril. In the semifinal round, she fell to WVU's Monique Burton 7-6, 6-1. Majdalani took third place after her 8-6 victory over PC's Megan Davis. Rebecca Poole lost to Davis in the first round 6-4, 6-2 before winning defeating Wright State's Kfarina Presti in the consolation bracket 6-3, 2-1 (ret.).

Alexandria Albano made it to the finals of the "C" singles after wins over MSU's Alix Lakow 6-1, 6-1 and WVU's Steph LaFortune 6-4, 7-6. PC's Paige Oelke got by Albano 7-5, 6-4.

Stephanie Novakowski played in the "D" singles and fell to Presby's Margaux Melby 6-3, 6-1. In the consolation bracket, she dropped the first set 2-6 before making a comeback taking the next two sets 6-3, 10-7 against MSU's Meredith Lortie.

In the "A" doubles, Williams and McGowan were champions after wins over the teams of Caruso and Oelke 8-2, Lakow and Madeline Antero 8-2 and LaFortune and Olga Elkin 8-4. Poole and Majdalani lost to PC's Heather Isbell and Virginia Isbell 8-5 in the first round before winning two consecutive matches to take the consolation bracket - 9-8 over MSU's Meg Rozboril and Heather Butt and 8-6 over Pilsbury and Monique Burton 8-6.


 

 

Albano and Novakowski defeated WVU's Gabriela Blaskovicova and Milica Pantovic 8-4 in the "B" doubles before falling to eventual champions to the team of Presti and Kenisha Webb from WSU in the semifinals.

Joe Camillo's Dukes head to West Point, N.Y. for the Army Eastern Championships Sept. 26-28.
