Dukes Complete Tremendous Weekend at Bucknell Invitationals

LEWISBURG - The Duquesne women's tennis team picked up where they left off in day two of the Bucknell Invitational.

Alexandria Albano and Andrea Sailor finished in first place in the Flight "B" Doubles after a pair of wins over Bucknell in the semifinals (8-1) and a 9-8 (6) victory over Buffalo in the finals.

Zena Williams remained perfect on the season as a singles player, as she breezed through the competition scoring victories over Mount St. Mary's Chelsea Johnson (6-1, 6-1), Buffalo's Denise Harijonto (7-5, 6-2) and Villanova's Jaclyn Williamson (6-1, 6-3). In the championship match, Williams dropped the first set 0-6 to Buffalo's Andrea Novaveanu but rebounded for a 6-3, (10-5) win.

Rachel McGowan was only one win away from facing Williams in the finals, as she scored a pair of wins over Kaitlin Hallahan from Mount St. Mary's (6-1, 6-1) and Tania Varela from Bucknell (6-3, 6-2) before falling to Novaveanu (6-2, 6-4).

Johanna Bezjak picked up two wins in Flight "B" Singles with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Bucknell's Carlin Calcaterra and a 6-2, 6-2 win against Jessica DeCarlos from Fairleigh Dickinson. Bezjak fell to Buffalo's Diana Popescu 6-2, 6-0 in the semifinals. Rebecca Poole scored a first round victory over Fairleigh Dickinson's Sarah Delliere 6-3, 6-1 before falling to Dar Dwojewski of Bucknell 6-3, 6-2.

Sailor had a strong showing the Flight "C" Singles. After dropping her first match to Buffalo's Diana Toia, she advanced to the consolation finals.

 

 

In the Flight "A" Doubles, Williams and Poole teamed together to score a match over Bucknell 8-1 before Villanova ousted them 8-6. Bezjak and Rachel McGowan advanced to the quarterfinals with wins over Mount St. Mary's 8-3 and Fairleigh Dickinson 8-3. They fell to eventual champions Buffalo 8-3.

The duo of Lanna Buehler and Kristen Swenson fell to Villanova in the Flight "B" Doubles 8-6, but rebounded for an 8-4 win over Bucknell followed by an 8-1 victory over Loyola and an 8-4 win over Villanova in the consolation match final.

The Dukes travel to Erie, Pa. to face Mercyhurst in Oct. 13. This will be the final match of the 2007 fall season.
