Dukes Take 3 Trophies At Toledo Tourney

Toledo, Ohio -- Duquesne's women's tennis team took home one bracket championship and two consolation championships at the Toledo Rocket Invitational Tournament with squads from Akron, Detroit Mercy and Xavier. The women swept both championships in the Flight B Doubles bracket. The doubles team of junior Katie Riedinger JR (Plum Borough, Pa. / Plum) and freshman Diana Stein (Powell, Ohio / Village Academy / SMU) won the Flight B Doubles Championship win a 9-7 win over Akron's Jennifer Miller and Diana Serafini. The duo topped Detroit Mercy's Andrea Buter and Nicole Karr 8-1 and Xavier's Andrea Kelley and Sarah Potts 8-6 to gain the championship match. Sophomore Sarah Shanahan (Columbus, OH / Bishop Watterson) won the Flight B Singles Consolation Championship with a 6-4, 7-6 win over Akron's Serafini. Shanahan, who lost the opening match of the round robin play to Xavier's Potts (6-4, 6-1), won matches against DU teammate sophomore Julie Wagner (Erie, PA / General McLane) by 6-1 scores and Detroit Mercy's Rachel Merritt (6-4, 6-3) to gain the finals berth. Shanahan and Wagner teamed up to win the Flight B Doubles Consolation Championship giving DU duos a sweep of that bracket. The team, who lost to Akron's Miller and Serafini (8-2), won their next match against Detroit Mercy's Renee Kuzava and Jodie Back 8-6 to gain a berth in the finals where they topped host Toledo's Daniella Moran and Eva Szuch 8-5 for the trophy. Duquesne tennis will next be at the Omni Hotels East Regional Championship, an Intercollegiate Tennis Association event in Boston, MA, beginning Friday, Oct. 25th.
