Dukes Head To A-10 Women's Tennis Championships

April 15, 2004

Duquesne University's women's tennis team will be competing in the Atlantic 10 Championships this week at the Tennis Center of College Park in College Park, Maryland starting on Friday, April 16th. The Dukes are the sixth seed in this tournament and will face #11 St. Bonaventure at 10:30 a.m.

The Dukes, who ended the regular season this past Tuesday with a 5-2 win over the Big East's Pittsburgh, have an 11-9 record, 7-9 in the Spring competition. Leading the Red and Blue are two freshmen and a junior, Sarah Shanahan (Columbus, Ohio / Bishop Watterson). Shanahan posted a 15-7 singles record this season while the freshman duo of Jackie Hughes (McKeesport, Pa. / McKeesport) and Alicia McNamara (Voorhees, N.J. / Eastern HS - Pendleton School) combined for a 34-12 singles mark with Hughes' 20-3 record leading all DU players. In addition, senior Alina Klinova (Moscow, Russia / W1278) will bring her three straight all-conference citations to the courts in suburban Washington, D.C.

Duquesne finished in seventh place last season while Temple won the 2003 championship. All 12 conference schools field teams in this sport.
