Melissa Stewart Sets DU Record At IUP Open
April 24, 2004
Duquesne sophomore Melissa Stewart (Indiana, Pa. / Indiana) led the Dukes at Saturday's Indiana University of Pennsylania Open with a discuss throw of 160 feet, 9 inches that won the competition, set a new Duquesne record and qualified her for the NCAA regionals.
The Indiana, Pa. native broke her own school record of 156' 0" that she had set at last year's Atlantic 10 Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The second place finisher, Youngstown State's Katy Williams, was over 14 feet behind Stewart; Williams' toss went for 146' 7". DU freshman Amanda Haeg came in third with a throw of 131' 8".
Stewart contributed another medal to DU's six at this meet when she finished third in the shot put with a toss of 42' 4.25". Sophomore Kerri Durica finished second in the triple jump with a leap of 37' 2". Junior Sarah Fetterman's jump of 10' 9", just an inch off her school mark of 10' 10", was good for third in the pole vault. Sophomore Brianne Scott took third in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 12:14.40.
The Dukes, who also competed in this week's Penn Relays, next head to Richmond, Virginia for the 2004 Atlantic 10 Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Sat-Sun, May 1-2, 2004.
