Dukes Take Two Golds At WVU Classic

Duquesne University women's track and field team grabbed two first place finals finishes at the West Virginia University Holiday Classic on Saturday. In all, they captured five medals on the day.
In the track events, junior Melissa Blackburn (Wexford, Pa. / North Allegheny) finished at the head in the 400 meter run with a time of 1:04.69. Fellow soph Chivon Younger (McKeesport, Pa. / Wilson Christian) grabbed first place in her heat in the 500 meter race with a time of 1:26.71 while freshman Ashley Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Schenley) took second in her heat with a time of 1:24.23.
And in the field competition, senior Shea McMillan (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Mt. Lebanon) won the triple jump with a mark of 36 feet 11.00 inches. McMillan also was second in the long jump with a leap of 17 feet 9.00 inches.
The Dukes swept the medals in the triple jump as junior Kristen Micsky (Greenville, Pa. / Reynolds) and sophomore Kerri Durica (West Mifflin, Pa. / West Mifflin) finished second and third with marks of 36' 4.25" and 35' 1.75". This duo also secured two firsts in the long jump trials: Durica took the first flight with a trip of 16' 4.50" and Micsky took the second with a jump of 17' 9.00".
And sophomore Alana McClanahan (Cleveland, Ohio / Western Reserve Academy) took first in the hammer throw prelims with a toss of 41 feet 5.00 inches.
The Dukes are off until Saturday, January 24, 2004 when they head to Lewisburg, Pa. for the Bucknell Octagonal.
