NEW ORLEANS - Duquesne track and field's Mercedes Oliver and Valerie Palermo each garnered 2016-17 U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic honors, the organization recently announced.

To qualify for USTFCCCA All-Academic honors, student-athletes must have compiled a cumulative GPA of 3.25 and either be ranked nationally during the indoor season or participate in any round of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Both Oliver and Palermo represented the Dukes at the 2017 NCAA East Regional, as Oliver competed in the discus and Palermo in the steeplechase.

In addition, both the Duquesne men's and women's teams were recognized as USTFCCCA All-Academic Teams.

The women's track and field team posted a 3.51 team GPA while the men's team finished with a 3.2 GPA.

All told, 360 NCAA Division I teams were honored for their academics by the USTFCCCA, as 218 of those were women's teams compared to 142 men's programs.
