Dukes Take First Win, 3-1, Over Morehead State

Richmond, Kentucky - Duquesne Univiersity's volleyball team rebounded Saturday afternoon with DU's season-first victory over Morehead State, 3-1, at Eastern Kentucky's Comfort Suites Challenge at McBrayer Arena. The game scores were 24-30, 32-30, 30-16, 30-24.

The win gave the Dukes second place in the tournament, behind the undefeated host Colonials. Senior Diana Wuebker (St. Henry, Ohio / St. Henry) again paced the Dukes with 17 kills (16.5 kpg) while freshman Laura Kastein (Huntsville, Ohio / Benjamin Logan) repeated her mark of 18 digs, today both team- and game-best defensive plays. Junior Amanda Haeg (New Prague, Minn. / New Prague) added 14 kills and sophomore Dana McLaughlin (Aliquippa, Pa. / Hopewell) saved 12 digs. Fellow soph Kristin Garnett (Frankfort, Ill. / Lincoln-Way East) set up 44 points, giving her a two-day mark of 11.7 apg.

Wuebker and Garnett were named to the all-tournament team.

After the Eagles took the first game, 30-24, the Dukes fought back to tie the match with an extra-time 32-30 victory. Duquesne went up 2-1 with a commanding 30-16 win and held on in game four, taking MSU by six points, 30-24.

Morehead State had four players in double figure kills led by Erin Peak's 16 and Laura Cox's 15 winners. Cox tied Kastein for game-best 18 digs while Katelyn Barbour recorded a game-best 59 assists.

Saturday's match evened both teams' 2005 season record to 1-1. Host Eastern Kentucky (1-0) faces Georgia State (0-1) later this afternoon.

Duquesne will host its own tournament, the two-day Duquesne Invitational, next weekend, Sept. 2-3, 2005 with the Dukes opening against St. Francis (PA) at 7:00 p.m. Friday at the Palumbo Center. DU next will face Rider at 11:00 a.m. Saturday followed that evening with a match with Cleveland State at 7:00 p.m.
