Duquesne suffered its second loss of the day with a 3-0 fall to Akron in the nightcap of the Duquesne / Robert Morris Invitational Saturday at the A.J. Palumbo Center. Setter Kristin Garnett and middle hitter Diana Wuebker were named to the all-tournament team.
Akron took game one 30-24 racking up 20 kills and hitting .271 for the contest. The Zips matched that score in game two, but the contest saw steady play from both teams as Akron hit .286 (16-6-35) and the Dukes hit .205 (16-7-44). Game three saw the visitor take a 30-22 margin, despite hitting just .114 (15-10-44). The Red & Blue had a less than expected game on the attack with just eight kills on 43 swings.
On the week, Garnett collected 198 assists for a 12.38 average; Wuebker slammed 44 kills for a 2.75 average and Stephanie Hopkins racked up 70 digs (4.38) to lead the Dukes.
Duquesne now stands 2-2 on the season and will travel to Youngstown State on Tues. Sept. 7, for a 7:00 pm match.
