Dukes Shut Out La Salle, 3-0, In A-10 Opener

Philadelphia, Pa. - Duquesne University's volleyball team opened their Atlantic 10 Conference schedule with a 3-0 victory over host La Salle Friday night at Tom Gola Arena. The game scores were 30-18, 30-18 and 30-25. The Dukes upped their overall record to 8-5, 1-0 in A-10 play.
Junior Amanda Haeg (New Prague, Minn. / New Prague) and sophomore Lindsay Hess (St. Henry, Ohio / St. Henry) led the Dukes and the match with 14 kills apiece. Senior Diana Wuebker (St. Henry, Ohio / St. Henry) sparkled on the defensive end with 15 digs.
Freshman Laura Kastein (Huntsville, Ohio / Benjamin Logan) added 12 digs. Sophomore Kristin Garnett (Frankfort, Ill. / Lincoln-Way East) set up 40 winners along with 10 digs. Garnett upped her Atlantic 10 leading mark to 12.39 assists per game.
The Dukes took an early 4-1 edge in game one and surged forward to a convincing 30-18 victory. Sophomore Dana McLaughlin (Aliquippa, Pa. / Hopewell) and senior Monica Tinsley (Cincinnati, Ohio / Winton Woods) paired for four blocks in the win.
The Explorers kept in touch with the Dukes in the next game, staying within one at 9-8 before the Red and Blue moved out to another 30-18 victory.
In what-turned-out-to-be the final contest, La Salle opened with a 2-1 lead, their first since a 1-0 mark that opened the first game. The teams battled until Duquesne grabbed a seven-point lead at 25-18 on the way to the 30-25 win to clinch the match.
La Salle's Stephanie Owen's 11 kills paced the Explorers' attack. Carolyn Jones had a game-best 20 digs while Caitlin Conner contributed 22 sets. LSU is now 6-7, 0-1 in league competition.
Duquesne remains in the City of Brotherly Love for a 4:00 p.m. match with Temple at McGonigle Hall. The Owls (8-7, 1-0) topped Saint Louis, 3-0, Friday (30-20, 30-28, 31-29). The Billikens, in their first season as an Atlantic 10 program, are 5-8, 0-1 in league competition.
