The Duquesne volleyball team opened its 2004 Atlantic 10 season sweeping visiting George Washington 3-0 (30-21, 30-28, 30-25) Saturday night at the A.J. Palumbo Center. The Dukes improved to 7-7 (1-0) while the Colonials fell to 3-7 (0-1). Senior Erin Trageser and junior Stephanie Hopkins led the match and DU with 13 kills each while Diana Wuebker recorded a match-best 15 digs and seven blocks. Kristin Garnett had a match-best 42 assists as well.

George Washington was led by Juliene McLaughlin with 12 kills. Service errors proved costly for the Colonials who racked up 10 on the night to DU's four.

After an some-what easy 30-21 victory in game one, the Dukes had to pull together in the second contest to out-last the Colonials 30-28. George Washington came into game three determined to avoid the sweep and held a 21-16 edge before the Red & Blue used solid hitting and smart play to out-score GW 14-4 to overcome the deficit and snag the 30-25 margin.

Erin Trageser had a concrete performance hitting .464 on the day with 13 kills and no errors on 28 swings. She added 10 digs in the win. Karisa Decker secured the libero spot with 13 digs and added an ace.

Duquesne hit .299 (48-13-177) in the match to GW's .185 (49-24-135).

The Dukes host West Virginia in a non-conference bout this Tuesday, Sept. 27, at 7:00 pm at the Palumbo Center.
