Dukes Fall to Rhode Island in Five Games

The Duquesne volleyball team suffered a 3-2 Atlantic 10 loss to visiting Rhode Island Friday evening at the Palumbo Center. Sophomore Stephanie Hopkins (Tonawanda, N.Y./Sweet Home) led the match and five Dukes in double figure kills with 20 and added 15 digs in the loss. Freshman Avery Dunn (Austin, Texas/Stephen F. Austin) posted a match-high 46 assists. Senior Sarah Morrow (Baytown, Texas/Robert E. Lee) led DU with 17 digs while sophomore Diana Wuebker (St. Henry, Ohio/St. Henry) racked up nine blocks.
Rhode Island took a 30-20 edge in game one before the Dukes rebounded with a 30-27 edge in game two with the help of Ashley Macko (Pittsburgh, Pa./South Park) and Dunn serving for six-straight points each.
The Rams gained a 2-1 edge taking a 30-22 advantage in game three and the Dukes strolled to a 30-19 win in game four behind sold hitting posting a .324 (14-3-34) accuracy for the game. URI served first in the fifth and deciding game, but the Dukes won the opening point of a kill. Duquesne held a 5-3 edge after a kill by Macko and blocks by Dunn and Wuebker, but Rhode Island brought on a strong attack to take a 6-5 edge. The game stayed within a two-point reach until the Rams served five straight points for a 13-8 edge they would not relinquish.
Duquesne is back in action on Saturday as they host La Salle in a 7:00 pm Atlantic 10 contest.
