Dukes Top GW, 3-1, At Smith Center

Washington, D.C. - Duquesne University's volleyball team continued their winning road trip with a 3-1 victory over George Washington Satuday night at the Smith Center. With the Sept. 25th home win over the Colonials, the Dukes completed their first regular-season sweep of GW since the series began in 1977.
Sophomore Amanda Haeg (New Prague, Minn. / New Prague) and junior Stephanie Hopkins (Tonawanda, N.Y. / Sweet Home) added 14 and 11 kills, respectively; Hopkins also had 16 digs. Freshman Kristin Garnett ( Frankfort, Ill. / Lincoln-Way East) set up 48 points (12 apg) and saved 19 digs. Junior Karisa Decker recorded 17 digs.
After the Colonials won the first game (30-26), Duquesne took the next two, 30-26 and 30-18. GW attempted to force a fifth game but was held off by the Dukes, 36-34. The teams battled evenly in game four to the 20-point mark. GW then made a push and built a 24-20 lead before Duquesne tied the game at 27-27. Neither team budged until the Dukes took a 35-34 lead and ended the match on a kill by Garnett.
GW (4-16, 1-7 A-10) was led by Shannon Parks with 20 kills along with 21 digs by Janine Brown. The loss extended the Colonials losing streak to eight matches.
Duquesne (11-13, 3-5 A-10) returns to action next weekend in Philadelphia, Pa. when they face La Salle on Friday, Oct. 29th at 7:00 p.m. followed by a 4:00 p.m. match at Temple on Saturday, Oct. 30th.
