Dukes Falter to Fordham

The Duquesne volleyball team suffered a 3-0 set-back to visiting Fordham Sunday afternoon in Atlantic 10 action. Game scores were 21-30, 25-30, 17-30. Diana Wuebker (St. Henry, Ohio/St. Henry) and Amanda Haeg (New Prague, Minn./New Prague) led the Red & Blue with seven kills each while Laura Kastein (Huntsville, Ohio/Benjamin Logan) and Karisa Decker (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) had a team-high 11 digs each.
Cassie Sharp led Fordham and the match with 11 kills while Tasha Johnston had 15 digs in the win. Fordham recorded 12 team blocks for the match.
Duquesne served for five-straight points to take an 8-2 lead in game one, with the Rams inched to within a 12-13 reach and knotted the game 15-15 before taking their first lead (17-15) to two kills. Fordham extended its lead to 21-18 on four unanswered points and snagged a 27-20 lead on a 10-1 scoring run before capturing the 30-21 decision.
Fordham started strong in game two with a 6-1 lead paced by two aces set the pace. Duquesne's Haeg hit back-to-back kills to help the Dukes get within a 10-13 reach, but the Rams took advantage of two DU hitting errors for an 18-11 advantage. Duquesne closed the gap to a 20-23 reach on three kills and saw a 25-28 deficit, but it wasn't enough as they fell 25-30.
Game three saw the visiting Rams leading 8-3 on five unanswered points and they extended the lead to a 14-5 advantage with the help of three Duquesne hitting errors to secure the win. Duquesne saw a 9-15 reach mid-way through, but would not get closer to a lead.
The loss puts the Dukes at 12-10 overall, 4-5 in Atlantic 10 action.
The match was DU's first Dig for the Cure fundraiser to aid in the fight against breast cancer. Pledges per digs were solicited and donations were collected with all proceeds benefiting the Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The Dukes had 51 digs for the match.

Duquesne returns to action Nov. 25 when it travels to cross-town rival Robert Morris for a 7:00 pm non-conference match.
