Duquesne University handed top-A-10 seed Dayton just its second Atlantic 10 loss of the season taking a 3-1 victory on Senior Night Saturday evening at the A.J. Palumbo Center. The Dukes (15-15, 7-7) finish the regular season ranked fourth in the Atlantic 10 while Dayton (21-7, 12-2) captured the regular season title.

Junior Stephanie Hopkins led the Dukes and tied the match lead with a career-best 25 kills hitting .423 on the night as she committed just three hitting errors on 52 swings. She added 14 digs and a tied the match lead with four service aces. Junior Diana Wuebker added 15 kills, nine digs, nine blocks and two aces while freshman setter Kristin Garnett had 53 assist, giving her 1,400 on the season to become the Dukes new single-season assist leader.

It was the final regular season match for seniors Ashley Macko (Pittsburgh, Pa./South Park) and Erin Trageser (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin), but they will conclude their season in style competing in the A-10 Tournament this coming weekend at the Palumbo Center. Macko posted 13 digs and eight kills while Trageser recorded 11 digs and seven kills.

Dayton took the first game 31-29 before DU rallied and fought for its No. 4 ranking winning the next three straight. DU grabbed a 30-25 win in game two followed by an impressive 30-17 edge in game three. Hopkins led that game hitting 10 of the Dukes 20 kills. The fourth game saw 14 tied and seven lead changes before Dayton took a 27-25 edge. A Hopkins' kill and Karisa Decker ace tied the game and a Dayton ball handling error gave DU a 28-27 edge. Wuebker and Trageser blocked a Flyer attack for the next point and Wuebker sealed the win with a kill.

 

 

Duquesne is host to this year' A-10 Tournament which begins Friday, Nov. 19, as the four-seeded Dukes face No. 1 seed Dayton at 5:00 pm followed by No. 2 Xavier vs. No. 3 Temple at 7:30 pm. The Championship match will take place Saturday, Nov. 20, at 7:30 pm at the Palumbo Center. The A-10's tournament champion earns the league's automatic bid into the NCAA tournament.

This year marks the first time the Dukes have qualified for the league tournament since the league switched to a four-team tourney back in 1995.
